There is nothing quite like the dread of coming home after a long day, putting your key in the front door, and realizing it won’t turn. Even worse? Having the key snap completely in half inside the cylinder.
As homeowners, we tend to take our external doors for granted until they stop working. Modern uPVC and composite doors use sophisticated multi-point locking systems to keep your home secure. They are brilliant pieces of engineering, but like anything with moving parts, they wear out over time.
The good news is that door locks rarely fail without warning. If you know what to look for, you can replace a faulty part before you get locked out in the cold.
Here are the three biggest warning signs that your door lock needs some attention:
1. The Key is “Sticky” or Hard to Turn
If you have to wiggle, jiggle, or pull the key out slightly just to get it to turn, the internal pins inside the cylinder are wearing down. Alternatively, the mechanism inside might just be clogged with years of grit and dust.
- The Fix: Never force it! Forcing a sticky key is the number one cause of snapped keys. Try a quick spray of a dedicated graphite-based lock lubricant. If that doesn’t smooth things out, it’s time to swap the cylinder.
2. The Handle Feels Loose or “Floppy”
When you lift your door handle to engage the bolts, does it feel crisp and firm, or does it droop like a wet noodle? A floppy handle usually means the spring cassette inside the handle itself has snapped, or worse, the internal gear box in the door mechanism is on its last legs.
- The Fix: If the door is still locking but the handle sags, you might just need a new set of handles. If the mechanism itself feels clunky when you lift the handle, don’t ignore it—that’s a sign the gearbox is about to jam permanently shut.
3. The Door Needs a “Slam” or a “Lift” to Lock
Over time, heavy doors can drop on their hinges by just a few millimeters. When this happens, the locking hooks and bolts no longer line up perfectly with the keeps on the frame. If you find yourself physically lifting the door by the handle just to lock it, you are putting immense pressure on the whole system.
- The Fix: The door hinges likely need a quick adjustment to bring everything back into alignment. Leaving it as it is will eventually break the expensive lock mechanism inside the door.
